| Review of Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc Private Bin 2006 |

Our favourite white wine. For those who hate Aussie Chardonnay We are fanatical about New Zealand Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs. Every other white we try is measured against them. They are extremely dry, almost tart wines with buckets of flavour and without the taste of oak sawdust to be found anywhere. There are a bunch of good ones: Montana, Hunters, Kim Crawford, Huia, Oyster Bay, Cloudy Bay, Babich. All except Cloudy Bay are great value (to be honest I think Cloudy Bay is way overrated). But our fave has to be Villa Maria. Not just fantastic value but consistently great Sauvignon that is fab with food or just to sip on its own. If you like gooseberry and grapefruit flavours then you will love this wine. It is a screwcap like almost all Kiwi white wines and I'm a big fan of that for wines which should be drunk young. Keep an eye out for any of the Villa Marias and grab the Private Bin ones if you spot them. |
